Somatic Therapy in Watford: Why Healing the Body Is the Missing Piece of the Mind's Recovery

Create Your WellnessMind & Wellbeing10 min read

There is a phrase that has become a landmark in body-centred psychology: "the body keeps the score." From the work of psychiatrist Bessel van der Kolk, whose decades of research into trauma established what many practitioners had long intuited but now had neuroscience to articulate: the body does not simply experience stress and trauma — it stores it. And it stores it in ways that talk therapy, however skilled, often cannot fully access or release.

The Neuroscience of Embodied Experience

When the nervous system interprets something as a threat, the brain's survival systems respond faster than conscious thought. The amygdala fires. The body braces, freezes, or collapses. Stress hormones flood the system. These responses happen beneath rational cognition — and when the threat does not fully resolve, they can become lodged there. The implication, well-supported by neuroimaging research, is that trauma and chronic stress are not primarily stored in the narrative, thinking parts of the brain, but in the subcortical structures that govern survival responses: the amygdala, the brainstem, and the body itself. Talking about what happened does not necessarily change what is happening in these deeper systems. For that, we need to work at the level of the body.

What Somatic Therapy Looks Like in Practice

A common misconception is that somatic therapy involves dramatic physical catharsis. This can be part of the process for some people in some moments — but it is not the norm, and not the goal. Somatic therapy at Create Your Wellness is characterised by:

  • Slowness — the pace the nervous system can safely integrate
  • Curiosity — inviting awareness of bodily sensation without judgment
  • Titration — working at the edges of comfort, not beyond them
  • Resourcing — building the body's sense of safety before approaching difficult material

Sessions include guided body awareness, breathwork, gentle movement, and sometimes touch-based interventions, alongside conversation. Many clients find the most significant shifts happen in the quietest moments — a subtle release of tension in the chest, a deepening of the breath, a warmth spreading through the limbs as the nervous system recognises safety.

"The body has been trying to tell you something. This is where you learn to listen."

Who Can Benefit?

  • Those with chronic stress or anxiety expressed physically
  • Those with chronic pain or physical symptoms with a psychological component
  • Those who feel disconnected from their body
  • Those drawn to embodied approaches and wanting a more integrated relationship with their experience
